While all animals (including humans) are prone to some genetic and breed-specific health issues, English Setters are a relatively healthy breed.
The 3 main health concerns are:
6 wk old puppy getting BAER tested |
- Deafness (genetically related to the dappled coat pattern but is revealed at 5 - 7 weeks of age by BAER testing each puppy in the litter)
- Hip Dysplasia (as a large breed, they can be prone to hip & elbow dysplasia but testing and selective breeding for healthy animals has reduced the incidence rated markedly in the past 20 years) (see Orthopedic Foundation for Animals)
- Thyroid disease (English setters can be prone to low thyroid in the middle to later years)
